Sodom is a German metal band from Gelsenkirchen, founded in 1981. They are among the pioneers and most successful classics of the German extreme metal scene, alongside Kreator and Destruction. Their playing, significantly different from that of their contemporaries, influenced numerous thrash, death, and, especially, black metal bands of the late 1980s and early 1990s.

Musically, Sodom has maintained its own distinct style, combining aggressive and extremely fast thrash metal. With their extremely harsh riffs compared to other modern thrash metal bands and their rough, raw vocals, Sodom are considered pioneers of new musical trends, such as death metal and black metal of the 1990s.

Sodom was previously often condemned by the press as "war warriors" (German: "Kriegsverherrlicher"), as the musicians addressed themes of war and violence (often in a highly obsessive manner) in their lyrics. Fans of the band, however, claim the opposite. A close reading reveals the critical undertones that underlie the songs. For example, songs like "Persecution Mania" don't glorify war, but rather describe it as a terrifying and traumatic experience. The chorus of the song "Ausgebombt" ("Don't play with death / War is just around the corner / Destroy your weapons / Learn from the past") (German: "Spielt nicht mit dem Tod / Der Krieg Vergangenheit") should be understood in this interpretation of war and violence. Tom Angelripper also said in an interview that the whole band is against war, which is reflected in songs like "Remember the Fallen" or "Schwerter zu Pflugscharen".
