A documentary by Dave Grohl about the history of Los Angeles' Sound City studio. Grohl got the idea to make the film in 2011, after Sound City Studios in Van Nuys, California, closed. He bought the Neve console, which Metallica, Nine Inch Nails, Guns N' Roses, Rage Against the Machine and many other legendary bands (including Nirvana's cult album Nevermind), used to record at a sale of the studio's equipment. Tom Petty, Trent Reznor, Neil Young, Lars Ulrich (Metallica), John Fogerty, Josh Homme (Queens Of The Stone Age), Lindsey Buckingham and Mick Fleetwood (Fleetwood Mac), Frank Black, producers Butch Vig and Rick Rubin and many other rock heroes share their memories of Sound City in the documentary. "This is a film about truth, about craft and about the integrity of rock 'n' roll," Grohl wrote in a press release sent to reporters by Roswell Studios, where the film was shot. The film premiered at Sundance on January 18, where the Sound City Players, a supergroup made up of Grohl's characters, also made their debut.
