Gandhi: The film tells the story of the life of the great Indian ruler and teacher of humanity, Mahatma Gandhi. From his arrival in South Africa in 1893 to post-war India, Gandhi always and everywhere preached only peaceful struggle, a peaceful response to any violence. And if at first it looked simply ridiculous to many, then half a century later the world learned that a simple and at the same time great man led his country to complete independence from the British colonialists. A man who single-handedly changed the world, showing the way to millions. I have already said many times that violence can only give rise to counter-violence. However, seeing scenes of the beating and even shooting of peaceful Indian demonstrations by the British, a mad fire flares up in the heart. I want to be there and crush, mercilessly split the skulls of these English dogs with their own butts! Why did they come to India anyway? Help for backward, uncivilized countries, yes, of course. It’s interesting, but when they shoot at peaceful peasants, for some reason it’s not called barbarians, but highly civilized Western people, huh? And every time after such an outburst, I understand how far I am from real enlightenment. When after this you see the compassionate face of Gandhi (the brilliant role of Ben Kingsley), you feel an involuntary shame for your unnecessary ardor. People in India would have long ago raised a bloody uprising, and then the same humanity would have dubbed it a “war of liberation”, another new “October”... But Mahatma Gandhi is not all of humanity. This is a superman. And he stopped the bleeding. A true son of the Indo-Aryan race, Gandhi accomplished the impossible with his love and wisdom. Well, the British had to give in. Gandhi has behind him the five-thousand-year-old spiritual wisdom of his people, which, as it turned out, is not so easy to defeat with muskets and trample under soldiers’ boots. And further. I think this is one of the most powerful, sincere films in history, telling about the very best.
